It really helps to perceive the mini roughly as you would on the actual table top, where you'll honestly never notice if one of your edge highlights is a wee bit too wide or slightly uneven.Īnd lastly, if you're feeling like one of your edge highlights really looks off: It can be easier to slim it down by re-applying the base colour than to work out a really sharp highlight. If your highlights are a little rough and thick here and there, it won't be as obvious.įurther, make it a habit to examine the model at arm's length. Mixing the base colour and the highlight colour at a 1:1 ratio makes the transition much less obvious. These have shorter bristles which makes it easier to control in those cases, but it's absolutely not necessary.Īnother thing that worked well for me was to use a colour that isn't quite as stark of a contrast as the ones usually recommended by GW for their highlights.

There's also situations, like highlighting small-ish armour panels and such, where getting that sharp angle isn't possible and you have to trace that edge with the actual tip of the brush I use a size 0 (or size 000 for really fine highlights) W&N Series 7 Miniature brush for that.

That works sufficiently well with any brush that holds a sharp point, but it's easier to be neat with smaller brushes, I feel. The easiest way is to use hold the brush at a very sharp angle and gently run it along the edge you want to highlight. You can lighlight before or after finishing the model I generally prefer to paint in subassemblies, put down all of the base coats and layers, then highlight, then assemble. And if I say "way better", I mean "holy shit it's not even a fair comparison at this point" better. You can buy yourself a Winsor & Newton Series 7 for roughly 75% of the price of an equivalent Citadel Artificer brush and they're way better.
